Finance training courses
Why
Our course aim is to help you gain confidence in using financial terminology, understanding financial statements, and mastering key financial management skills to help you make decisions.
Finance is the language of business. We simplify the subject starting with the fundamentals of finance through to strategic financial management.
Below is an example of our 3-day Finance for non financial managers course content. The course content and duration can be adapted to meet the needs of learners.
Finance for Non Financial Managers
This is a comprehensive curriculum designed to bridge the gap between operational management and financial oversight. It moves from basic bookkeeping logic into the strategic analysis required for executive decision-making.
Core competencies include:
1. The Language of Business (Finance Fundamentals)
Before diving into numbers, the course establishes the fundamentals of business accounting and reporting. You’ll learn financial terminology, about legal requirements, the accrual method of accounting and other key accounting concepts.
2. The Big Three (Financial Reporting)
You will learn to read and reconcile the three essential financial statements:
- Statement of Income (P&L): Measures profitability over a reporting period.
- Statement of financial position (balance Sheet): A “snapshot” of what the company owns and owes at the end of a reporting period.
- Statement of cash flows: Tracks the actual movement of physical cash over the reporting period, which is vital in understanding how a business can be “profitable” on paper yet run out of money and face insolvency.
3. Analysis & Interpretation (Metrics and Cash Flow)
This section moves beyond reading to understanding.
- Metrics: You’ll use metrics to help interpret the statements and benchmark performance allowing you to spot trends or red flags in an organisation’s health.
- Cash flow management: Having developed interpreting skills, you’ll explore how inventory, debtor and creditor management is essential to maintaining a healthy cash position.
4. Planning & Strategy (Control & Decision Making)
The final part focuses on forward-looking skills and decision making:
- Budgeting & Control: How to set financial targets and manage variance (the difference between the plan and actuals).
- Break-even Analysis: Calculating how much you need to sell to cover costs. Additionally, how much you need to sell to reach a profit target.
- Investment Appraisal: Using financial techniques to help decide if a new project or piece of equipment is worth investing in over the long term.
